The courses were organized within the framework of the decision of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, General Oleksandr Syrsky, on in-depth study of IHL norms by military personnel who will be involved in performing combat missions. The lecturers are specialists from the NGO “League of Officers”. The overall coordination of the project is carried out by the Central Legal Department of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
A total of 10 two-day trainings were conducted with the support of the Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance (DCAF). In total, over 400 military personnel from various garrisons of the Armed Forces of Ukraine received training on IHL.
During the classes, the participants had a unique opportunity to enrich their knowledge with modern international practices, discuss practical aspects of the application of IHL norms on the battlefield, and exchange experience gained during high-intensity combat operations with Russian troops.
The Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance Initiative has been in effect since February 2023.
